In accordance with the tripod policy thrust of the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi MFR, aimed to Consolidate, Collaborate and create innovations capable to achieve maximum revenue generation, suppress smuggling activities to the barest minimum and enhance trade facilitation, in view of the above, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, Customs Area Controller (CAC) of Apapa Customs Area Command, has said, “The Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) is committed to ensuring uninterrupted port operations despite the impending nationwide protest.”
Compt. Olomu disclosed this information at a stakeholders’ interactive meeting in Apapa on Tuesday, the CAC emphasized the need to rebuild confidence among importers, exporters, and other port users, assuring them of the availability of customs officers on all working days.
His words: “Customs officers and Men will discharge their functions effectively and support legitimate trade, with help desks available to address inquiries.”
Adding, “Customs officers and men will work from 8am on weekdays and may work during weekends if necessary. Let me use this opportunity to appreciate compliant port users and reaffirmed the command’s resolve to ensure maximum revenue collection without compromising due diligence in cargo examination.”
In his remarks, the Commissioner of Police, CP, Lanre Ishola, thanked the Controller for convening the meeting and assured that the police will respect citizens’ rights at all times.
Reacting the Port Manager, Mr. Charles Okaga, reminded stakeholders that Apapa Port operates 24/7 and urged shipping companies and terminal operators not to impose demurrage on cargoes under their control for days they couldn’t effect services for clearance.
His words: “The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) will sensitize stakeholders to dispense their services normally, ensuring a smooth operation amidst the planned protest. With this reassurance, port users can expect seamless operations and trade facilitation at Apapa Port, despite the impending protest.”
