In a groundbreaking ceremony held at Villa Park Hotel, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, Clarion Shipping West Africa officially unveiled its state-of-the-art container vessel, Ocean Dragon. This milestone marks a new era in Nigeria’s maritime industry, with the vessel poised to ease cargo movement across Nigerian ports and strengthen regional trade links within Africa.
In his remarks, the Vice President of Clarion Shipping West Africa, Belladine Eloka, described the event as a significant step towards providing practical shipping solutions for Nigerian importers and exporters. Eloka acknowledged the company’s Chinese counterparts, led by Mr. Peter Leng Lijiang, and local collaborators, including Alhaji Ahmed, Chairman and Managing Director of Hafnaz Oil and Gas, who provided critical support for the vessel.
“Ocean Dragon has already commenced operations, sailing from Calabar to Port Harcourt with empty containers and positioning itself to support Nigerian traders.”
Eloka, asserted, “One of the primary purposes of the vessel is to facilitate the movement of Nigerian products to other African countries. Businesses from Abuja, Calabar, and other regions have already begun making bookings, demonstrating the growing demand for efficient logistics solutions.”
The vessel’s role in facilitating export was also highlighted, with Eloka stressing that Ocean Dragon will drastically cut transit delays at regional ports. “Even when your container lands at Lome, instead of leaving them there for weeks, Ocean Dragon can move them within hours to Nigeria,” she assured stakeholders.
This development is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of Nigeria’s maritime trade, enabling businesses to access new markets and customers across the continent.
In addition, Clarion Shipping has entered into strategic collaborations with global shipping lines, including the AMC, AMCGN, PIL, and Maersk Line, to ensure seamless cargo connections between China and Nigeria.
Direct shipments from China are set to begin in October without transshipment delays, offering customers a more efficient logistics chain.
The event featured keynote addresses from prominent industry leaders, including the President of the Igbo Market Association, Chief Chinedu Ukatu, who described the unveiling as an “epoch-making event” that will boost Nigeria’s maritime trade and strengthen Africa’s shipping capacity. Ukatu praised Clarion Shipping for investing in cutting-edge maritime technology and commended the company’s commitment to reducing emissions and protecting the environment.
Mr. Solomon Ogudu, Regional Manager of Clarion Shipping West Africa, highlighted the company’s evolution from a freight forwarding firm to a full-fledged indigenous shipping company with a footprint across Lagos, Onne, Calabar, and Onitsha River Port. Clarion Shipping’s service model offers shippers more flexibility, with the benefit of taking delivery at their preferred location. The company has pioneered operations in previously underserved regions and has moved over 200,000 TEUs across Africa through partnerships with global carriers.
He reiterated, “The unveiling of Ocean Dragon marks a significant step in Clarion Shipping’s efforts to bridge trade gaps, reduce logistics challenges, and position Nigeria as a stronger player in intra-African commerce. The event concluded with a call for sustained patronage to ensure the growth and sustainability of the indigenous venture.”
