In a recent twist of political permutations and development, the former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, has faced another setback as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dissolved the Rivers State executive committees of the party at all levels.
In view of the above, the NWC established a caretaker committee composed of loyalists of the former governor of the state and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bar. Nyesom Wike.
Despite being members of different parties, Amaechi and Wike have been in a power struggle for control of Rivers State, with Wike gaining the upper hand recently.
Recall after contesting the APC presidential ticket with Amaechi, President Bola Tinubu chose to collaborate with Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during the election. Subsequently, Wike became a member of the president’s cabinet.
Sequel to the NWC meeting in Abuja, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Felix Morka, disclosed to newsmen that, ” The caretaker committee would be chaired by Chief Tony Okocha, with Chief Eric Nwibani as secretary.”
Morka added, “Other members of the Rivers APC caretaker committee, include Hon. Chibuike Ikenga, Prince Stephen Abolo, Hon. Silvester Vidin, Senibo Karibi Dan-Jumbo, and Miss Darling Amadi.”
However, Hon. Tony Okocha is a staunch supporter and political ally of Wike. He recently led a delegation of Wike’s loyalists on a courtesy visit to the APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in Abuja.
During the visit, he asserted, “Amaechi worked against Tinubu in the last election and demanded that Wike should be directly reached for appointments rather than Amaechi’s loyalists.”
Felix Morka, reiterated, “The caretaker committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive and fresh electronic party registration of all members in the state.”
“The caretaker committee is subject to the directives and programmes of the National Secretariat in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the party.”
