KENYA REDUCES IMPORTED VEHICLES AGE LIMIT

Information available to GLOBAL RAYS Media has revealed the Kenya State Government intends to reduce the age limit of second hand vehicles imported into the country currently at eight years to three years.

As reported, the plan by the Kenyan Government is aimed to reduce the dominance of used vehicles market in the country’s automotive sector with a view to boost imports substitution and development.

Statistics has it that Kenya imported used vehicles account for 85 Per cent of car purchases in the East African country, amounting to 86,626 vehicles in 2017.

However, it was learnt in a Policy draft, Kenya government aims to gradually but systematically reduce and replace the over 80 per cent market share of used vehicles and used parts with new products manufactured or assembled in Kenya.

Thus, Nigeria –  Kenya bilateral move is aimed to boost the domestic automotve industry and discourage the importation of vehicles, especially fairly used ,increased import duties from 20 per cent duty on cars and 10 per cent on Commercial vehicles to 70 per cent and 35 per cent respectively in July 2014.
